How did my pet get allergies and how are they diagnosed?
Just like humans, most allergies are genetically inherited. There are some breeds that are known to be more susceptible to allergies, however any breed can be affected. Allergies are most often noticed when the pet is 6 months or older.
The signs of allergies often indicate underlying problems, so unquestionably it is important for your pet to be seen if you think they may suffer from allergies. Your local veterinarian will be able to create a treatment and diagnostics plan specifically for your pet.
What happens if my pet is diagnosed for allergies?
If your vet believes your pet has food allergies, you may be asked to start a food/ diet elimination trial. This method works by sticking to a strict diet and removing a single protein or filler ingredients so you can identify exactly what your pet may be reacting to.
Environmental allergies are often diagnosed with blood or skin tests, depending on what method is best suited for your pet.
There are many different types of allergens that could affect your pet, and the symptoms can range from mild to severe. Your pet may only suffer from one allergy, or they may have multiple.
Unfortunately, allergies are not able to be cured, although they are treatable and can be managed to ensure your pet has the best life possible! If you suspect your pet is suffering from allergies, please contact our clinic to book a consultation!
